The consensus was that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would be traded before the 2022 NFL season.
Unfortunately, surgery on his shoulder injury might have discouraged teams from trading for him.
Likewise, his performance during last season’s playoffs wasn’t really convincing.
Therefore, it became clear that he might become an expensive backup behind second-year player Trey Lance because of his $24.2 million base salary for 2022.
However, the 49ers had the leverage to restructure Garoppolo’s contract because none of it was guaranteed.
That’s what they did, and he remained with the Niners.
As he walked to practice in the 49ers’ facility, Garoppolo said, “What’s up, faithful? Missed y’all.”
